Thanks for the apples. We sorted the apples by color. We made a picto graph with our apples. We have been writing about the life cycle of the apple (hopefully these will be displayed when you come for conferences). We learned apple vocabulary; skin, peel, flesh, core, seed, and dice. The kids had a blast dicing their apples on Thursday! 19 out of 20 kids LOVED the applesauce. Best of all, my observations would indicate that making applesauce could be directly correlated with student interest in the apple books in our read to self library!
Hats off to the families of Room 139! Our class won the grade level pizza party because together you raised the most money in first grade! Keep watching for pictures of the class feasting on pizza.
Also, everyone now has a Westwood Wildcat t-shirt. T-shirts should be worn every Friday (Thursday, if Friday is a non-school day). First and foremost it reminds all of us to be proud of our hard work and our school. Second, the classes compete for the title and sign indicating we won the team spirit contest. We had a great week. We started small groups in both Math and Language Arts. We had a fire drill and a lock down practice. In both cases the kids were very responsible. A highlight was using the Ipads to work on blending and segmenting simple words. The low....I was so busy I forgot to take pictures:(
This week we will start using the computer lab. We will begin guided reading. We will read and write about the Life Cycle of the apple. On Friday we will use the apples to make applesauce. I'll try to take a few photos that day! Thanks again for sharing your amazing children with me. I LOVE my job each and everyday! Look at these amazing kiddos! They read quietly for over 15 minutes, allowing me, Mrs. Bares (teacher & volunteer), and Ms. Kolstad (SCSU work study student and future speech pathologist) to do some benchmark assessments and make up work.
They are also working on partner read. Partner read will help students with fluency and high frequency words. Partner read would be a great conversation to have with your child this weekend. Talk about the importance of reading things over and over, thinking about the stories. With a partner, sometimes it is a challenge to stay on task! Off task behavior results in the loss of the privilege to have a partner. This is sad for many reasons: 1) it just feels bad, 2) you don't work as hard on your fluency, 3) it interrupts the teachers from small group leveled instruction, one-on-one teaching, and assessment. None of the above pictures show anyone losing the privilege to have a partner. If a child is pictured alone, it was read to self! Listen to read, where they will hear many rich stories multiple times, increasing their vocabulary. Math with a Partner, where students play math games building math fluency and vocabulary. Finally, we visited the library on Friday. Your child should have brought back 2 library books. Please return them next Friday. Below is a link to a video. The video teaches how to take care of your library book. The kids would enjoy watching, learning from, and talking about the video at home. http://www.teachertube.com/video/how-to-take-care-of-library-books-121765 This week in first grade we worked on learning to do things the Westwood Way! We practiced being safe, being kind, being our best, and being a positive learner. You kids were fantastic.
We also learned the routines for most of our language arts block / daily 5: Read to Self, Word Work, Work on Writing, & Listen to Read. Our personal book boxes have arrives and are ready, so we will learn partner read this week. We have just started learning math routines. The kids played a partner game called Fill the 20 Frame (Math with a Partner). This week Mrs. Bares and I will complete some language arts assessments. Hopefully, with routines set and data gathered, we will move to small group leveled language arts instruction next week! We will also finish learning math routines: Math Writing, & Math by Myself. Small group math instruction is an additional week of two away. Another focus this week will be Bus Safety. Watch your child's folder for the bus test on Friday! |
